Sept. 14, 2009—SEIU Illinois Council and Teamsters Joint Council 25—the state’s two largest unions—announced they will support Pat Quinn for Governor of Illinois and combine their considerable resources to elect Quinn in the February 2010 Primary.
“Pat Quinn is the right choice to lead Illinois out of this recession,” said Tom Balanoff, President of the SEIU Illinois Council which represents 170,000 union members. “Quinn has been a fighter for working families all of his life.”
Officials from Teamsters Joint Council 25, which represents more than 100,000 members, will also attend Monday’s endorsement.
"Pat Quinn is a governor who consistently listens to the issues affecting working families, which is why our union is looking forward to maintaining a close relationship with the former Teamster," said John T. Coli, president of Teamsters Joint Council.
The two unions—which represent about one fourth of the metropolitan area’s union households—worked together in the 2007 Chicago City Council elections.
